Music Voyage – changing lives one note at a time

Music Voyage is a thriving grassroots music initiative, whose aim is to bring music education to the people living on farms and informal settlements in the KZN Midlands.

This NPO was founded in 2009 by Helen Mennie. Katherine McClelland became the director of Music Voyage in 2016. Katherine studied contemporary music and has worked as both a performer and a teacher. She started with Music Voyage as a volunteer in one of the informal settlements in the Midlands and is now running the project. Katherine is passionate about creating uplifting opportunities for others, to empower them to change their lives and make a lasting difference in their communities through the inspiration, beauty, and discipline of music.
Music Voyage is based in Howick but reaches students as far as Mooi River, Nottingham Road and Karkloof. The beneficiaries of Music Voyage are the previously disadvantaged youth living in rural areas. Music Voyage offers instrument lessons as well as facilitating groups such as choir, recorder, marimba etc.

Our marimba band is doing remarkably well. Last year they took a trip to the International Marimba Festival in Johannesburg as spectators, it was the highlight of their year. This year they are ready to compete. If we can get enough sponsorship, we’ll be in Gauteng on 28th July. The children enjoy every part of what comes with playing an instrument and being part of a team.

The Music Voyage project is so much more than learning music. Our education interventions develop self-confidence and positive self-esteem. We believe that by implementing these training programs we create in our children a sense of discipline and commitment. These skills are enhanced by performing, which exposes them to various cultures and social classes, developing valuable social skills.

We would like to thank all our generous givers for their continuous support. We couldn’t do it without them.

We have so many plans for 2018, so many more children to reach. If you want to get involved or help with funding please contact: Katherine on 082 413 9843, or Vanessa on 0714192820,
Help us to grow talent and change lives.
