Jade Sky Hike 2018

The organising team behind the event

The 11th Annual Sunflower Jade Sky Hike will take place on Father’s Day this year – Sunday, June 17.

The hike is held annually in memory of Jade Preston who passed away from leukaemia at just 8 years old. The hike was initially held to raise funds in support of Jade’s brave fight but it has since been held in her memory after she sadly succumbed to her illness. This commemorative walk aims to “celebrate life and to remember those who were challenged by cancer and to support those being challenged with cancer,” says Mandy Tyrer.

The hike appeals to outdoor and hiking enthusiasts as well as families and individuals of all ages and fitness levels. All are welcome to join – it is not a race but simply a beautiful day to be enjoyed in the outdoors with those closest to you. The hike starts from the Sani Pass border post at 8.00am and covers about 8km up the mountain to the Highest Pub in Africa and down again.

Carry passports, dress warmly

The Midlands branch of the Four Wheel Drive of Southern Africa will lend their support again this year by selling breakfast rolls and hot beverages on the route as well as seconding hikers and ensuring that all participants return safely to the border post. Interested hikers should carry their passports and are encouraged to dress warmly and carry their own refreshments to sustain them along the way.

The donation entry fee is a minimum of R120 per person and the first 120 entrants paying by EFT will receive a Sunflower TOPE.

Educate and register stem cell donors

Funds raised are in support of Alec Cowan who is fighting a rare form of cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s T-cell Lymphoma, and The Sunflower Fund, which educates and registers stem cell donors to give hope to patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood disorders.

Funds raised are also in support of Mary Ann Hartley, a tutor at Maritzburg Tutor Centre, who is currently undergoing breast cancer treatment.
