New Principal  for Hermannsburg School in January 2018

Trevor Harbottle will take up his duties as Principal in Hermannsburg in January 2018, and our school looks forward to welcoming him, his wife Jenna and son Josiah to our school.

Trevor Harbottle, who will take up his duties as Principal in Hermannsburg in January 2018, is an experienced and passionate educator, having taught for the past 13 years in Kokstad, King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape, and in Johannesburg. He completed a BA in Human Resource Management in Port Elizabeth, with majors in Business Management, Sociology and Industrial Psychology, before completing his PGCE in 2004.

Trevor was born in Swaziland, but also spent some of his early years in Zimbabwe and Phalaborwa, in Limpopo. Most of his schooling took place in Johannesburg, but his true development occurred in the Eastern Cape. After he matriculated, Trevor spent five years living in Hogsback, a small mountain village in rural surroundings not unlike those of Hermannsburg, and this is one of the reasons why he looks forward to immersing himself again in a similar community. It was in Hogsback that Trevor developed his passion for growth in others.

His approach to teaching is founded on a desire to see growth in others; growth not just in one area but in what he terms the 3H’s: Head, Heart and Hands. The ‘Head’ refers to the content knowledge that needs to be taught and learned, the ‘Heart’ deals with the values and personal characteristics which one can nurture and develop, and the ‘Hands’ looks at the skills which must be acquired in order to cope and excel within our ever-changing world.

Trevor enjoys spending time with his wife of 5 years, Jenna, a remedial ECD and Foundation phase teacher, and his 15-month-old son, Josiah; they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a daughter in December. Some of his favourite things involve taking long walks in wooded areas, holidays in game reserves, and eating coffee and cake in ambient settings.

Trevor is honoured to be the new Principal at an historic school like Hermannsburg, which achieves excellent academic results, offers a variety of sporting and cultural activities, and is set in a magnificent location. Trevor plans to use his interests in educational leadership, thinking skills and technology to position Hermannsburg as a caring institution which prepares scholars to value their local heritage and to utilise the international opportunities that Hermannsburg uniquely provides, in order to thrive in a global context.
