Celebrating the samoosa man

Everyone loves a good samoosa, right? We swear by the samoosas at Thokans in Lion’s River (we’re talking sweetcorn and potato), but it seems there’s another samoosa hot shot on the block.

A recent Facebook post by Parklane SuperSpar in Pietermaritzburg recognising long-standing samoosa trader, Khalil Omar, went “viral” in July, showing that the love of local runs deep at the popular shopping centre.

The centre’s regulars liked, shared and commented on the post and the Parklane page was flooded with comments like, “These are THE best samoosas!” and “You can tell they are made with a smile.”

“The post has made it overwhelmingly evident that Pietermaritzburg residents have a lot of love for the smiling samoosa man,” Parklane Spar said in a press release.

Talking about local, Khalil has traded outside the SuperSpar for 30 years. He explained that his samoosa recipe was passed down from his grandfather to his father and eventually to him. Over the years, it has been tweaked and perfected to produce the best samoosas possible.

He expressed his gratitude to Parklane SuperSpar owner, Cameron Mackenzie, saying, “Without him, I don’t know where I would be.”

It was a recent decision by Mackenzie to purchase a new umbrella for Khalil that prompted the post. Mackenzie wanted to make sure that Khalil could trade while being protected from the elements. He also wanted to assist in boosting his “station” outside the family grocery store.

“One thing is clear – if you haven’t tasted one of Khalil’s famous samoosas yet, you are definitely missing out!”
