Winterskloof Conservancy Water Workshop – Sunday 16 Mar at 10 at Cowan House & Doreen Clark Nature Reserve

As part of the Winterskloof Conservancy’s commitment to healthy rivers for healthy communities, we are going to be focusing on clearing the seeps, streams and wetlands of our Valley, which make up the watershed of the Dorpspruit. For the first event of the year, we have organised a Water Workshop, which is designed to make learning about river health assessments fun and easy for people of all ages, for both left and right brained people and even those old dogs who seem unable to learn new tricks! Everyone is welcome, whether you are a member of the Conservancy or not.

This photo was from the Curry’s Post Conservancy’s Workshop held last month.

A grant from the N3 Toll Concession (N3TC) to the Midlands Conservancies Forum has enabled Penny Rees (of the Mngeni River Source to Sea Walk fame) to run these workshops for the 14 Conservancies that make up the Forum and now it is our turn, so please join us. It will kick off with a presentation at Cowan House at 10am, which will provide the background and show us the critters we will be looking for in the stream and what they tell us about water quality. We will then go and see how many of the good, the bad and the ugly we can find and then work out the score for the stream running through the Doreen Clark Nature Reserve (St. Michaels Road). You will learn to do miniSASS river health assessments and be able to do these for the streams flowing through your property or in your neighbourhood. If we continue to do these and record the results, we will be able to trend the quality with time.

Please bring a picnic lunch with chairs, so we can refuel afterwards and meet other Winterskloofers who are passionate about our Valley. What better way is there to meet other residents than in our beautiful Nature Reserve with its grassland, forest and stunning views? There is parking off the road for quite a few vehicles – sorry, but no dogs are allowed, even on leashes.
