Treverton Schools News June 15
Treverton at KZN DUATHLON CHAMPS
Treverton was well represented at the KZN Duathlon Champs held on the 7th of June. A standard duathlon event is made up of a 10km run, 40km ride and a 5km run. Distances differ for the junior age groups.
The event was held at the Toyota track in Eston and conditions on race day were perfect. The athletes had a very early start and it was still dark when they arrived at the track. Events such as this are incredibly intense and the fields are relatively small but highly competitive.
Jonathan Pellow-Jarman (grade 9) finished 5th in his age group but managed to ride the second fastest bike leg of the race. Micaela Sclanders (grade 11) had a great race and finished 2nd overall and 1st in her age group . Catherine Pellow-Jarman (grade 12) finished 2nd in her age group and 4th overall. Dean Packham (grade 10) finished 2nd in his age group and 4th overall.
College Staff member Travers Pellew had a very good day and he finished 5th overall and 1 st in his age group. Travers has had a wonderful influence on a big group of pupils and it is through his efforts that their performances have improved.
Treverton Netball Stars
Treverton College pupils Aimee Jooste, Tove Moreax and Megan Weavill are making their mark in Netball circles. Aimee and Tove attended the Umgungundlovu Schools Netball Trials in April and were selected for the u17 team. Aimee was also chosen as a non-travelling reserve for the u/17 team at the KZN Schools Trials held at Hoy Park.
Aimee and Megan were selected for the Open Pietermaritzburg and Districts Independent Schools Team at the Durban and Pietermaritzburg Districts Trials held in May at St Mary’s DSG.
The team took on the Durban and Districts Independent Schools side in a closely and contested match and beat them by one point.
Treverton’s Matthew Dahl’s Mathematics success
A number of children at Treverton Preparatory recently wrote the International Mathematics Assessment for Schools, written by children nationally and around the world. Matthew Dahl, a Grade 7 pupil, achieved the highest score of all the Grade 7’s in KZN, a noteworthy achievement by this very talented young man. Matthew has been invited to attend the International Mathematics Competition in China in July and we wish him well as he takes on the challenge.
Treverton shines at Toastmasters Contest
Shannon Freeman represented KZN at the recent Toastmasters International – 2015 Youth Leadership Prepared Speech Contest Finals – titled “Is Chivalry dead?” We are thrilled to announce that Shannon was placed 2nd overall.
An hour prior to the event the sponsors, Nedbank, tasked the finalists to write an essay on ‘their dream for South Africa’ and Shannon took first place for her essay on improving poverty.
