The Gay & Lesbian Network – cancellation of street parade on Saturday 14 December
The Gay & Lesbian Network regrets to announce the cancellation of the street parade which was to take place on Saturday 14 December in Pietermaritzburg.
The Gay & Lesbian Network was approached by the Msunduzi Municipality Disaster Management who initially approved permission with the SAPS for the parade to take place and requested us to cancel the parade due to the death of Nelson Mandela. Out of respect of Nelson Mandela and mourning in our country and the world the Gay & Lesbian Network acceded to the request.
However the Gay & Lesbian Network will continue with its initial programme of events at the Hall 7, Royal Showgrounds from 12pm which would include a tribute to Nelson Mandela and singing the national anthem. There will also be a condolence book where members of the public will be invited to write messages in the condolence book in memory of Nelson Mandela. The condolence book would be handed over to the Nelson Mandela Foundation after the Pink Mynah festival.
The Gay Lesbian Network pay tribute to a great leader and calls on all to join us as we honour Nelson Mandela and stand in solidarity to continue the work Nelson Mandela has left us.
Anthony Waldhausen, director of the Gay & Lesbian Network said “The Gay & Lesbian Network is saddened by the passing of our great leader Nelson Mandela. He stood for everything that we are striving for and which is espoused in the South African Constitution which he and all negotiators fought for. His strength and commitment to democracy and human rights has made our beloved country strong but there is still a long way to go to ensuring that we are truly free from gender based violence, discrimination and hatred. It is our resolve and commitment to continue where he left off and to work tirelessly for what he stood for. We love you Madiba and your light will continue to shine through our deeds.”
