SPUR Merchiston Tag Rugby® Festival
Merchiston Preparatory School gears up for their SPUR Merchiston Tag Rugby® Festival
Merchiston Preparatory School in Pietermaritzburg is hosting their 7th Annual SPUR Merchiston Tag Rugby® Festival this month.
This event has grown every year and provides a wonderful opportunity for teachers and pupils to enjoy a great event and play Tag Rugby®.
Tag Rugby® is a non-contact form of rugby and a tackle is made by removing a tag when your opponent has the ball. The game is fast and fun. Girls and boys can play in the same team as there is no tackling, scrums, line-outs or kicking. The game improves hand-eye co-ordination, which is beneficial for all sports development and other rugby related skills.
The festival takes place on 30 May 2015 at Merchiston Preparatory School and the organisers have already confirmed the participation of 60 teams. Schools come from far and wide to compete against the large contingent of local community schools invited to join the festivities.
Title sponsor Spur have seen great value in their sponsorship of the event, once again committing themselves as the title sponsor for 2015. Mr Khakhi Diala from Spur Group Marketing commented that “Spur Steak Ranches is proud to invest in school sporting events that nurture sporting skills of children at a young age for the development of future stars and by promoting physical activity at school sport level”.
This action-packed, fun-filled festival starts at 07h00, with the final games ending at 16h00. Catering for Grade 4 to 7 boys and girls, Merchiston will be hosting the teams and their supporters for this event, and provision has been made for the sale of refreshments and meals to all. Schools will be allowed to enter as many teams as they wish at a cost of R50 per player.
Merchiston is also excited to be hosting the SA Rugby Legends at the event again this year. Stefan Terblanche remarked, “It’s wonderful for SA Rugby Legends to be involved in the biggest Tag Rugby® festival in South Africa. Tag Rugby® provides a great opportunity by laying a platform for future rugby stars”.
“The Merchiston event has become a permanent feature on the Tag Rugby® Association calendar and we are thrilled to see the continued growth of Tag Rugby® in the KwaZulu Natal region,” commented Stuart McConnell from The Tag Rugby® Association. “Tag Rugby® has become extremely popular in South Africa and is well supported by the Sharks Rugby Union. Our Association needs energetic partners as the children simply love playing Tag Rugby® once they have played their first game. Merchiston Preparatory School have proven they have huge amounts of energy and passion for the game.”
