Six schools will be challenging each other in the upcoming Pietermaritzburg North Regional of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge that will take place at the AB Jackson turf on Saturday 12 March.

Confirmed teams for the tournament are host school St Anne’s College with Grace College, Howick High School, Carter High School, Linpark High School and The Wykeham Collegiate. In previous years, St Anne’s and Wykeham have both advanced through to the July Grand Finals.

According to the stats, St Anne’s edge towards being the favourites from the Pietermaritzburg North Regional having won the local title four out of the five years since the tournaments inception. In the inaugural tournament in 2011, Saints went all the way to win the overall tournament. The following year Wykeham dislodged the tournament’s defending champs, to make their first and only appearance at the Grand Finals where they finished fourth overall. The last three years, Saints have played in the medal games, finishing second, third and fourth.

Defending champs for the region, St Anne’s will be taking this regional one game at a time. Manager for the Saints, Megan Randall stated, “We are looking good. Our team comprises of eight new players, so it is a young team but we have a core of strong, experienced players that are still with us. The whole team are really keen, and with the fabulous guidance of our coach, Carlos Pereira and captain, Julia Saulez we hope to do well.”

Affirming Randall’s comments, coach for the Saint first team, Pereira said, “This is my third year with St Anne’s and we are keen to improve on our third place finish at finals last year. Because regionals are so early in the Hockey calendar, we will concentrate on getting our structure right and being accurate on our set plays.

Continuing, Pereira commented, “Teams to look out for – TWC who are in our pool and then our traditional rivals in GHS and Epworth for the cross regional games.”

Rob Philipson, MD for SPAR KZN said, “The midlands regional always offers great action with hard games being played. A badge of honour is that a team from this region has played in every single medal game we have hosted, so hugely competitive!

The tournament runs in conjunction with the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional that is being hosted at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School on the same day.

The two victorious teams from the Pietermaritzburg regionals will head to the finals that will be held at St Mary’s DSG towards the end of July.
