Defending champions, Durban Girls’ College retained their title in the SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament that took place at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG this weekend.

College took on St Anne’s in the gold medal game concluding two days of exceptional hockey. Less than a minute into the game, College’s Teagan McFall stormed towards St Anne’s goal slotting in a superb reverse stick shot into the top left hand corner.

For the next 29minutes the game had plenty of action but the scoreboard remained unchanged. Both teams surged towards their opponent’s goals but were unable to find the back of the net with brilliant defending from both teams.

St Anne’s having won the inaugural tournament in 2011 and finishing fourth last year made their third appearance at the tournament. Coach for St Anne’s girls, Carlos Pereira said, “The girls had such fun, it was great. We are a young team and they played so well. I was really impressed with the character they showed. In the semi-finals we were 1 nil down and 2 nil down in the penalty shoot-out and both times they managed to come back.”

Chatting about the performance in the finals, he stated, “Look we had one or two chances but didn’t manage to get them. Regardless, I am so chuffed with my girls. Well done to College, they deserved to win!”

Rob Philipson from SPAR KZN said, “Congratulations to all of the teams that came out this weekend, you are all winners! The action was fantastic with 29 exciting games being played and 87 goals being scored. I am in awe of the talent that was on the pitch this weekend, some great players coming through our school ranks. SPAR KZN is delighted to give them the opportunity to show off their skills against teams they don’t ordinarily get to play!”

Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School met St Anne’s in the semi-finals. Majority of the game they were 1 nil up, St Anne’s managed an equalised with time winding down. The game went to a penalty shoot-out to decide the fate of the two Maritzburg teams. Girls High went two nil up after the first two attempts but missed their remaining chances. St Anne’s didn’t, scoring three goals and winning.

Newcomers to the tournament, Westville Girls’ High School put on a magnificent display finishing second in their pool, just behind Pietermaritzburgh Girls’ High. In the playoff they met Pietermartizburg Girls’ High in the duel for third. In an intense game, Girls High didn’t allow Westville any real chances and beat them 2 nil securing a third place. This is the fourth time that Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High has been in the medals with a second position in 2011 and 2013 and a third in 2012.

Les Galloway, Tournament Director said, “What a conclusion to the regional tournament. We had exciting matches with many goals being scored. It was wonderful to see the players enjoying themselves playing hockey and then having loads of fun off the field. We look forward to next year’s tournament!”
