Praise for HUCTO stats questionnaire
HUCTO’s method of counting monthly visitors and a comprehensive questionnaire filled in by its members provided an important pointer to the value and contribution of tourism to the Midlands and KwaZulu-Natal.
This was the opinion of Karen Kohler, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal’s research manager, at a Tourism Statistics Seminar held in Pietermaritzburg this month.
She said that the province wanted to verify how much the economy benefited from tourism spending but it was difficult to collect information to update TKZN’s database of tourism assets and facilities because people were reluctant to co-operate.
“We need to know how many people are employed in tourism and how many rooms are available for tourists,” she said. “But the owners of some bed-and-breakfast establishments believe that this information is confidential. Unless everyone involved co-operates, TKZN will be unable to refine the current information so that it is 100% reliable.”
Dumisani Mhlongo, Director of Msunduzi-Pietermaritzburg Tourism, said HUCTO was an example for other CTOs to follow as its staff collected visitor statistics at the Howick Falls view site every month and every new HUCTO member completed a questionnaire with details about the number of employees, how many rooms were available, where its clientele originated, the annual turnover of the business, and how its facilities are advertised.
Lorraine Bryant, HUCTO’s secretary/manager, said that members take pride in contributing to the success of their own community tourism organisation. When joining HUCTO, they sign a charter pledging to embrace the ideals, objectives and values of HUCTO, whose mission is to promote and encourage tourism in the Howick-uMngeni area.
