Pink Mynah Festival

The Gay & Lesbian Network is to host the fifth Pink Mynah festival from the 8-14 December 2013 in Pietermaritzburg.

The festival is going to be a spectacular event with many opportunities to showcase local talent where the finals of the PMB Got Talent was held recently where local artist will perform at the KZN pageant and festival fair.

The most important aspect of the festival is to create awareness to the public of LGBTI issues and to promote equality and acceptance as espoused in our Constitution.

In 2013 the Network intends to introduce a new aspect to the festival, that of an awards evening to honour and acknowledge people who have made a difference to the LGBTI community. The event will take the form of a gala dinner which will also incorporate a pageant in which to crown the winners of Mr & Ms KZN. The pageant would be different as we would open the pageant to all who identify as Mr or Ms. and it would be followed by the annual Pink Mynah Parade through the streets of Pietermaritzburg and ending with a Festival Fair which includes stalls, entertainment and DJs. There will also be an after party and the participants and members of the public would be able to spend the day enjoying all activities on offer.

The street parade will also include a minutes silence to remember all LGBTI people worldwide who have being murdered through hate crimes and passed on due to HIV&AIDS. The festival forms part of the GLN initiative to mark 16 Days of Activism against women and child abuse and all forms of hate crimes in South Africa.

The Pink Mynah festival is sponsored by the following donors: National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, Open Society Foundation, Oxfam International and Foundation for Human Rights.
