Old Mutual joBerg2c riders to do it for “More Than Themselves” Leading media personalities seek to Do Great Things.
The 2013 Old Mutual joBerg2c mountain bike race kicks off on 26 April in the south of Johannesburg and ends nine days later at Scottburgh on the sea on 4 May, passing through the KZN Midlands. This year the race will feature celebrity riders Boity, DJ Milkshake, Kevin Grenfell, Gugu Zulu and repeat rider Letshego Moshoeu. All five will be riding in support of Old Mutual’s More than Yourself campaign, an initiative to raise funds in support of disadvantaged communities.
Old Mutual’s More than Yourself campaign has joined forces with a 46664 Nelson Mandela Day initiative to raise funds for mobile libraries along the 900km joBerg2c race route. Another beneficiary is Matla A Bana – a charity project aimed at improving and humanising the reporting system in South Africa to minimise the secondary abuse children often suffer when they report crimes against them.
During 2011 the Matla A Bana project assisted more than 13 000 children who reported crimes against them. The goal is to reach and help more than 20 000 victims.
The project has already trained more than 2 000 law officers, more than 200 doctors who do forensic medical examinations and more than 200 social workers on how to interact with abuse victims. More than 20 community groups have also been mobilised to assist. Said Robert Mafuna, head of sponsorships and events at Old Mutual, “This year’s Old Mutual joBerg2c mountain bike race is not just about the riders; it’s also a strong call to action to help the most vulnerable members of our society.”
The 46664 Nelson Mandela Day initiative has already delivered a library to Oppermans Kraal Primary School near Bergville in KwaZulu-Natal at a special community ceremony held recently on April 10. A second library will be delivered in Umkhomaas Valley near Ixopo on 2 May. Additional funds are being raised for a third library for another disadvantaged community.
To demonstrate Old Mutual’s commitment to making a difference in the lives of those in need, the Old Mutual Foundation has donated R100 000 towards the More than Yourself campaign. To pledge your support and help improve the lives of abused children, please visit www.morethanyourself.co.za .
The Old Mutual joBerg2c route includes off-roads less travelled as well as trails never travelled before. It is part race, part adventure and part game-changer.
As it takes competitors across the country, from the heat and dust of the big city, over some spectacular mountain passes, to the cool crisp air of the coast, it gives riders and supporters alike the opportunity to transform the landscape and lives they cross.
