Children from Grade One to Grade Seven paired-up with learners from Fortmannspruit School to read to them for 67 minutes.

“Mr Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place. We’re asking you for 67 minutes.”

On the 18th of July, Madiba’s 95th birthday, the children at New Hanover Prep school chose to honour Mandela Day by sharing their favourite stories with the children from the neighbouring farm school.  The NHP pupils arrived at Fortmannspruit School in their bus loads, armed with a myriad of books to captivate and inspire.  The stories were shared in pairs and 67 minutes later, new friendships were forged, hearts were inspired and unforgettable memories made.  The experience was equally enriching for both sets of pupils and NHP hopes to preserve this valuable relationship between the two schools in the future.

The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008 when he said: “We can change the world and make it a better place.  It is in your hands to make a difference.”

Happy birthday, Madiba!
