Michaelhouse Scholarship recipient
Luke van Rooyen, from Clifton Preparatory School, Nottingham Road, joined Michaelhouse School in this year’s new intake. He is the recipient of the prestigious Open Exhibition Scholarship to Michaelhouse.
Luke is the great, great grandson of Jan Smuts who was received Ad Portas to Michaelhouse in 1930. The award was introduced in 1928 by then Rector Bushell and is the equivalent of having the Freedom of a City bestowed on its recipient in recognition of significant personal contributions to both education and the nation.
Other noteworthy recipients include Colonel Sir Laurens van der Post, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Dr Ian Player.
Luke is pictured here in his Founders House tie, which he will wear with his Number Ones until he is formally inducted in a few week’s time, at which point he will be allowed to wear the famous red and white striped tie.
