The award, which is equivalent to having the Freedom of a City bestowed on its recipient, is traditionally made in the School’s Main Quad before the assembled guests, staff and boys. Dr Ahmed Mohamed Kathrada was met at the gate to the School by the Rector, Mr Greg Theron, from where he was led, with the accompaniment of a carillon of the School Bells to the Main Quad.

Senior Prefect, Mkuzo Kuwani delivered a citation and presented an illuminated scroll to Dr Kathrada who will then responded to his audience which included guests ranging from notable film maker Anant Singh to former struggle activist Charles Nupen. As the ceremony drew to a close, the Main Quad echoed to the traditional six cheers in acknowledgment of this dignified and momentous occasion.
