The African Sprint Champs took place at Shongweni Dam just outside Hillcrest at the beginning of April 2016. The continent’s best sprint paddlers took part in the event for the largest African Sprint Championships on record.
The championships had added significance for the majority of the paddlers as the event will decide seven available continental qualification places for the 2016 Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro in August.
Twenty different African countries took part in the event: Algeria, Angola, Cameroon, Cote d Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Libya, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, Seychelles, Soa Tome & Principe, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tunisia.

Rowan Mockler (A Block – Mackenzie) of Michaelhouse, Balgowan has just finished competing in the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Competition (WIDPSC). The event was held in Pittsburgh, USA. Rowan was accompanied by Mrs Candice-Ann Smith, who was one of the South African team coaches.
There were 93 competitors from around the world, competing in four categories: Persuasive speech, debating, interpretive reading and impromptu reading.
Rowan excelled across the board. He presented proudly wearing his Mackenzie tie. He has mastered every small part of his speech and his presentation was spot on. He chose a very interesting subject and has a unique approach which is a major advantage because he stands out.
He made the grand finals, and he came First for the persuasive speech category, a truly exceptional result. This is a remarkable achievement. Rowan Mockler was placed 9th in the world, overall.
