Michaelhouse learner is SA Laser Champ
The Laser Nationals were sailed over the Easter weekend in Simonstown. Michaelhouse boys, Sam Lombaard (Grade 8) and Nic Forshaw (Grade 10) sailed in the 4.7 fleet.
The conditions were very tough and racing was only possible on 2 of the 4 days. On the third day the wind was gusting over 60km a hour, during racing. Sam managed to hang in there with one arm in a cast (broken hand) and claim two first and a second on the day. With his winning the last race, he was crowned South African Champion for 2014.
Sam and the second place sailor had the equal amount of first and second positions and there points were level,but on count back Sam was awarded first overall. Nic finished 8th overall. The world championships take place in Karatsu Japan from the 8 to 15 August and Sam has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Championships.
There are only two sailors allowed to enter from South Africa,there will be 180 competitors from over 50 countries at the event.
