Maths literacy workshop

Opening Doors to the Language of Maths through the Reading to Learn (RtL) Programme (Tuesday 4 March at Ridge Road Primary School, Pietermaritzburg, 2.30-4.30 at R20 per person): The workshop will demonstrate the application of the RtL methodology to the teaching of maths through DVDs (for sale) of classroom practice and other activities. The problem for many learners is that the language of maths is written in a shorthand system, but teachers use oral procedures/explanations with worked examples as the primary mode for teaching maths. How to do procedures is rarely written down. For weaker students, following and remembering an oral procedure is extremely difficult. They battle to follow the oral procedure and example, and cannot remember it to solve maths problems. RtL overcomes this problem by getting students to say and write down the procedures as they are learning to do them. RSVP Mike Hart at hartm@lantic.net; 033 3460557; 0725888521
