Maritzburg College are once again the top senior boys’ canoe school after dominating the 2015 South African Schools Canoe Sprint Championships. Over a hundred schools from around the country gathered for three days at Roodeplaat Dam near Pretoria where the canoeists competed in four different distances – 5000m, 1000m, 500m and 200m events.
Competition was intense as the elite paddlers went head to head in some closely fought events. One of the surprises of the event was Brandon Orpwood from Maritzburg College who had arrived back from Brazil where he competed in the World Junior Canoe Slalom. Brandon together with his partner, Jarryd Gibson also from Maritzburg College, won the K2 500m and 200m finals much to the surprise of many of the competitors. Jarryd was awarded the Victor Laudorum at the end of the Championships. Jarryd is now the top U18 canoe sprinter in South Africa having also won the South African and KZN Canoe Sprint Championships.
