Lofty & Friends: Concert in the Valley : an Evening of Memorable Music
In a case of “playing it forward”, an evening of musical entertainment in various forms will take place in the Amber Auditorium, on the night of 6 November, entitled “Lofty & Friends: Concert in the Valley”. Aimed at raising funds for the Care Centre at the Howick retirement estate, Amber Valley, this is a fundraiser with soul – for many reasons. The musical menu is made up of a decadent mix of choir voices, solo voices, and instrumentalists from both Michaelhouse and the Meander Choir, showcasing a programme packed with a delightful list of tunes.
It all began with the Venter family of Michaelhouse School, all deeply musical, who originally offered a night of music as a prize in a charity evening. The winner was not in a position to take it up, and an offer was made to Lofty O’Connor, a resident of the Amber Valley Care Centre, to perhaps share this with his “friends”. And so a public concert was born, for all the friends of the Valley and the local Howick community, for a very worthy cause.
Paralysed at the age of 60, in an mtb accident on the Wild Coast, Lofty O’Connor’s life changed irrevocably and five years later, he speaks philosophically about “then”, “now” and the “future”. What he is very clear on is the fact that the Amber Valley Care Centre and the people with whom he interacts on a daily basis are his “friends”, and the Care Centre is his home. It is the friendly Valley, with it’s tranquil lifestyle and the caring community, which has saved him, and this is why he has chosen the Care Centre to be the recipient of the funds generated by the Concert.
I know where I will be on the night of the 6th of November – in the Amber Auditorium at Amber Valley, surrounded by friends, listening to music, in the company of a man who’s, despite being a “recovering quad”, eyes light up when he tells me we have to stop chatting – “It’s time for me to walk my little dog Dot.”
