Linda Hill Vodacom Change the World again
“I feel honoured, privileged, grateful, ecstatic and overwhelmed all at once” says Linda Hill, Fundraiser and Project Coordinator for Singakwenza, on being chosen as a Vodacom Change the World volunteer for the second year running.
Linda believes that education is key to making a difference in our country, particularly Early Childhood Development (ECD). “According to the World Health Organisation, early childhood is the most important phase for overall development throughout the lifespan and can determine a child’s health, education and economic participation for the rest of their life,” she says. Singakwenza has established a low cost, high impact ECD stimulation programme focussing on the age group 1-5 years in crèches in the KZN Midlands. The programme is implemented though Zulu trainers who mentor the crèche carers. The most exciting aspect of the programme is that the educational toys are all made by recycling waste materials, ensuring sustainability and low cost. Linda is very proud to be doing such worthwhile work, particularly when hearing schools say that the children from their crèches integrate and cope far better in Grade One than their peers. “Although the sheer volume of need out there can sometimes be disheartening, improving just one child’s life can change the world for that child.”
The Vodacom Change the World programme was first introduced in 2011, giving individuals the opportunity to volunteer their time and skills to work at a Non Profit Organisation for a period of 12 months. Linda was one of 21 selected from over 12 000 applications – because empowering caregivers to become educators rather than mere babysitters, is certainly changing the world. Project Manager Julie Hay says “We are absolutely delighted that Linda’s salary will be paid for another year by Vodacom. She has over 20 years of experience in public relations and marketing so is an invaluable asset to our organisation.” You can make be part of the change by becoming a Rainbow Champion and making a regular donation. Every contribution makes a difference.
