Karkloof Classic polo thrills the crowd

The Karkloof Classic polo tournament, a highlight of the local polo calendar, took place at Karkloof Polo Club over the past weekend, attracting eager fans and teams from across the country. The event was jointly sponsored by Safire Insurance Company, Barloworld Ford, Karkloof Safari Spa and Spurwing Horse Feeds. The sixteen teams were divided into three sections, with the 14 goal sponsored section producing some of the best polo to be seen at the moment in the country.

Team Safire (handicap in brackets), namely: 1 Ben Crowe (1); 2 Dirkie van Reenen (3); 3 Tom de Bruin (7);
4 Tommy Crowe (3), was in the final game on Sunday afternoon, taking on the team from Barloworld Ford (Brad Gace, Travis Timm, Clive Hill and Gillespie Armstrong). It was a tightly contested game, with the Barloworld Ford team fighting back valiantly against an initially rampant Team Safire, but they ultimately ran out of time, with Team Safire winning by one goal, 9-8.

Pierre Bekker, CEO of Safire Insurance, says, “Polo in this country is a game enjoyed by youngsters and adults, male and female players alike. It is especially popular in our farming communities, where Safire has a significant client base, thanks to our niche products for the agricultural sector. At Safire our sponsorship focuses on supporting healthy, outdoor activities and sports across THE board, such as the Safire Baynesfield MTB Classic which took place a few weekends ago, and various golfing events across the country.”
