Junior fly fishers to converge on the kamberg
The legendary fly fishing area of the Kamberg Valley is to come alive with young anglers as the KZNFFA plays host to the 2013 YOUTH NATIONAL FLY FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP from 22nd – 25th September.
This is South Africa’s premier event on the calendar for young fly fishers who eat , sleep and breathe this challenging discipline of angling. These skilled youngsters will be representing their own Provinces and will be working together as teams for a medal position after three days of putting their best cast forward along with their unsurpassed knowledge of how to trick a wily trout. For many, they will also be fishing their way into the best possible standings on the National Ranking list to gain opportunity for further selection to the Protea team. Logistics will be run from Glengary Resort in the Kamberg, and fishing will take place on various trout waters in the area. Both lake and river disciplines will be tested over the five sessions of fishing. The community will be involved to assist with marshaling of the anglers and measuring of fish for recording lengths on scorecards. If last year is anything to go by, the event will be very exciting with positions coming down to mere centimeters in overall fish lengths.
Our KZN Junior team is preparing well for the event and it will be comprised of a mixture of experience and new developing anglers who have been part of the KZNFFA’s Tendela project in the Kamberg. Last year’s national Champion ,Luke Criticos, along with fly tying marvel Christian Calliontzis will be looking to lead the team into netting, recording and releasing some fine catches.
Youth fly fishing has grown over the past few years, as has the level of technical skill and fly tying ability which has produced talented and knowledgeable anglers, some of whom have made their mark recently at the World Championships in Ireland. KZN’s Matt Gorlei was part of the Youth Protea Fly Fishing team that has recently returned from Ireland where South Africa finished 3rd overall, bringing back the team BRONZE medals!
A special dedication to the team will be made at the Opening Ceremony to the upcoming Nationals in the Kamberg. For further information on the event or representative fishing in our Province please contact Linda Gorlei firstname.lastname@example.org or visit www.kznffa.org
