Long weekends boost March visitor figures

THE 21 847 visitors counted at the Howick Falls view site during March was double the number of arrivals in the same month last year.
The significant improvement seems to be all about long weekends. There was a three-day long weekend including Human Rights Day on Monday, March 21, and then the Easter weekend lasted from March 25 to 28, whereas it fell in April last year. The busiest day was Sunday the 20th with 1 321 arrivals while the average daily count for the month was 705, increasing to 1 086 over public holidays and weekends.
Foreign visitors in March totalled 1 605, an improvement of 32% over February and about the same as March 2015.  Top four foreign countries were Germany (585), England (252), Holland (140) and Australia (80). Tour groups included 16 from Germany, five each from England and Holland, two from the USA, and one each from Belgium, France, Spain and Switzerland.
Groups of schoolchildren arrive from all parts of South Africa to view the waterfall, the total for March being 426.
An additional attraction for tourists at the view site one day was a Gauteng couple with four capuchin monkeys wearing caps and suits.

Since counting began in 2010, the uMngeni area has attracted tourists from 158 countries.
OUR THANKS to Harvard House for continuing to sponsor the visitor-counting project and to the small group of volunteers who assist at the falls.
