Hills Pet Slimmer of the Year Competition

It’s National Obesity Week from 15 to 19 October, and it’s not only people taking on weight-loss challenges. Nine dogs and one cat are currently finalists in this year’s Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year competition. They have lost an incredible 100kgs between them. Check out the once-podgy pets on www.petslimmer.co.za. Their inspiring weight loss stories and before-and-after photos demonstrate how losing excess weight has transformed their lives for the better.

South African vets say that more than half the patients they treat weigh more than is healthy. In response more than 350 veterinary practices around the country that run special weight-loss clinics for their obese patients. “Studies have conclusively shown that overweight pets are at higher risk of diabetes, complications during surgery, joint and mobility problems and breathing difficulties. The lifespan of an overweight pet is shortened by approximately two years,” says Dr Guy Fyvie, veterinary advisor for Hill’s Pet Nutrition.

The finalist with the highest number of votes at midday on 22 October will become the 2014 Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year and the top five will each receive R5, 000. Vote for your favourite #petslimmer or use the online tools to see if your own pet is a healthy size on www.petslimmer.co.za.
