Heatwave to hit SA interior, KZN braces for hot spell
Maritzburg and the KZN Midlands will see scorching hot weather for the rest of the week and most of the weekend, with the temperature peaking at 36C on Friday.
Cities from Bloemfontein to Pretoria will see consistently high temperatures this week, with heatwave conditions in some parts.
A heatwave is where there are consistently (three days or more) high maximum temperatures in a particular town or region, five degrees higher than the average max temperature in the hottest month of the year in that area.
In Pietermaritzburg, SA Weather Service figures show on its website, temperatures will reach 34C today, 36C on Friday and 33C on Saturday.
Mooi River shows highs from 33-35C between now and Saturday, while in Howick the peaks are 33, 31, 34C on Friday and 32C on Saturday, before some respite on Sunday. At this stage it appears Monday will be warm again before it cools somewhat (33C) with rain on Tuesday.
Elderly and infirm
Northern Natal will not be spared, with Vryheid seeing maximum temperatures of 33C today, 35C on Thursday, 36C on Friday and and 35C on Saturday.
The Weather Service advised on Twitter that the elderly and infirm should take particular care to stay hydrated and cool. Outdoor activity, excessive sport and hard labour should be avoided during the hottest part of the day. “Dress in light weight clothes and drink plenty of liquids. NOT alcohol.”
