Msunduzi Water – Geoff Tennant

What’s one of the safest things to do in ‘Maritzburg? Drink the tap water, of course! Bottled water has always bothered Pizzology Craft Café owner, Geoff Tennant. “It is so pointless and the plastic wastage is huge.” Since he opened three years ago, he has only sold bottled water under duress, encouraging customers to drink the Blue Drop accredited local water instead. Understanding the value of a good brand, he created funky Msunduzi labels with a Marlboro look and feel to make one feel really cool drinking our local water. ‘Pure, unfiltered tap’ reads the label! Apparently, it takes six litres of water to produce one litre of bottled water. Crazy when our water is delicious and perfectly good for you.

With his partner, Heidi Matisonn, he has created a cosmopolitan pizza experience, offering a wide variety of wood fired pizzas to accompany your water (or, as soon as his licence is granted, local craft beers). The ovens are stoked with invasive Black Wattle which Senzo Mwelase, a local forestry contractor, clears from the surrounding countryside, chops and delivers. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, many of the herbs they grow themselves. Recycling is big at Pizzology, but doesn’t end with just cans and bottles – veggie peelings and food scraps go home to feed staff member, Thandekile Ndisane’s, pigs. “We nick named one Pizza Pig and when she was slaughtered, Thandekile brought us a leg to roast,” laughs Geoff.

Geoff has always loved cooking, so despite his training as a plant pathologist and detours through the world of finance, he has arrived at a destination he clearly loves. He remembers his first job after leaving ‘Varsity was doing trials on Alien Invasive Plants with Working for Water, so it is no surprise really that he understands the importance of protecting our precious water resources. The Dorpspruit river flows near to the Café in Victoria Road, so it makes sense for the company to support DUCT (Duzi uMngeni Conservation Trust) River Care teams that clear the banks of invasive plants to improve the quality of our water. By ordering Pure, Unfiltered Tap at Pizzology, you will be contributing too.

NOTE: Blue Drop certification is a Department of Water Affairs initiative to encourage municipalities to improve both water quality and water management. Gaining Blue Drop certification is an indication that the water supply authority has complied with a stringent set of procedural, chemical, biological and other requirements.
