Exploring Karkloof

Bird Hide at Karkloof Conservation Centre.

We are surrounded by exception places to visit in the Midlands. When last did you head out towards Karkloof?

Karkloof Falls is a glorious even in winter, certainly worth winding down the long, dusty road to bask on the hot rocks or wander along the river banks. Obviously you shouldn’t make a braai fire during this dry and windy season, so pack a picnic instead. On high fire alert days the road down to the falls will be closed. If you need to check contact Twané 072 376 3023

The bird hides beside the pans at Karkloof Conservation Centre are a wonderful way to while away an afternoon – watching cranes, raptors and ducks. Open 6am to 6pm and if no one is around pop the entrance fee into the Honesty Box. R20 per adult, R10 for children and half price for pensioners of Fridays.

Join one of the regular walks held in Karkloof to celebrate fresh new growth and Spring flowers. On the third Friday of the month (next one 20 September) at Mbona Private Nature Reserve enjoy exceptional views, forests and grasslands with Keith Cooper (book: 082 574 1958) or on the first Wednesday join Robin McGillivray (book: 082 802 8949) to walk across the farmlands to the lovely Yarrow Falls – there is always something different in flower (next one 3 September). Both walks cost R20 which goes to the Karkloof Conservancy.
