Enthusiastic Eco-Community wins Bronze
Mpophomeni Conservation Group (MCG) received Bronze in the Eco-Community category at the glittery-green Enviropedia Eco-Logic Awards held at Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town recently
While MCG may not have won (Greyton Transition Town did), Penz Malinga and Ntombenhle Mtambo certainly felt like winners. “Everyone wanted their photos taken with us because we looked so cool in our outfits,” reported Ntombenhle, “They even made a special mention of the gorgeous girls from KZN when handing out the prizes!” Ntombenhle was resplendent as Permaculture Princess in a tutu and crown bedecked with vegetables, while Penz used SPCA finds and plastic waste to create a dramatic Bad Ass Bunny Hugger look – complete with an armful of soft toys.
Back home everyone believes they are winners too. Samson Phakathi of EWT was first with congratulations “MCG are walking the talk. This is well deserved. As a conservationist and resident of Mpophomeni, I am proud to be living with people who are full of enthusiasm and a will to produce organic food that will limit ones ecological footprint.”
Kevan Zunckel, Environmental Consultant “The usual suite of environmental challenges are prevalent in this township and the MCG are in the process of addressing them through direct action, raising awareness in the community and working with a number of NGOs to keep their work linked to the outside world. The progress and the impact that this group has made stands as an example to many who have far greater resources at their disposal, so one can only hope that their message does rain down on the rest of their community and more affluent adjacent areas.”
Naturally MCG chose to travel by bus, to limit their carbon emissions, so made the most of their time in the Mother City exploring the Green Point Park Biodiversity Garden, Oranjezicht City Farm and Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden. “What an inspiring place. This has motivated us to never stop caring for our community and our environment. We will keep aiming higher.” concludes Penz, “Many thanks to N3TC for supporting our dreams to inspire people to see the value of growing food, treat animals with respect, protect water resources and produce zero waste.”
MCG has inspired people far beyond Mpophomeni, demonstrating that there is indeed a better way. www.mpophomeniconservationgroup.wordpress.com
