Cordwalles School and Mrs Barnes celebrate 103 years

Celebrating 103 Birthdays together – so special!

Matt Veenstra & Samkelo Jiyane, both Grade 7 boys at Cordwalles Preparatory School, together with Ruth Forder (PR & Marketing) and Charlotte Usher (Old Boys’ Club secretary) had the privilege of having tea with Mrs. Lillian Barnes, a resident at Woodgrove Retirement Home.

Mrs. Barnes recently celebrated her 103rd birthday and was born only weeks after Cordwalles opened its doors for the first time in 1912. What an amazing feat and she was delighted to meet the boys who presented her with some gifts including a copy of the History of Cordwalles – “Looking Back with Pride” 100 years of Memories.

Born in 1912 in Durban to an English mother and South African father she lived most of her life in the city. Her husband had been in the shipping world. After his death, she spent some 12 years living with her daughter in Kingston, London. She moved to Pietermaritzburg ten years ago.

Cordwalles sends its warmest congratulations to Mrs. Barnes and wishes her and the school a very happy 103rd birthday.
