The Care Bear – bringing smiles to the Gogos and the children

It’s that huge smile that breaks open across the child’s face when you put the Care Bear into their arms, that is so very special. Every time we hand out bears, we are reaching into special places in these children’s lives, and this, combined with seeing the pride of our knitters as we collect their bears and pay them for their work, is what drives the success of the project.

The Care Bear Project is a fully registered NPO, started last year by local Hilton student, Rebecca Pinnell, uplifting local rural communities, by providing employment for the families, and by using the product of their work, the bears, as a means of bringing joy to the children in these communities – many of whom have never received a new toy in their lives.

Our knitters are all black women, predominantly pensioners. These grandparents have all too often lost their own children to AIDS, and now find themselves supporting grandchildren. R80 sponsors a bear, of which R50 is paid directly to the knitter. The balance covers the knitting kit and distribution costs.

To date we have donated over 700 bears, and we have paid over R50 000 to our knitters, making a significant difference to the lives of the disadvantaged families in our community.

Our target is 5 000 bears for Christmas distribution, and we would love you to be a part of our project. Funds can be donated via our bank account, or using our Zapper code. R80 sponsors one bear, R400 covers a full kit of 6 bears. We challenge you, your office, your bookclub, your golf group, your friends, to get involved and help us bring smiles to these children.
