Café Society Winners Create a Stir

The greatly anticipated annual Café Society Awards, sponsored by Sunday Tribune Magazine (SM) and Illovo Sugar South Africa, took place on Monday the 11th of November at Colombo Factory Café in Durban. The awards evening was geared to celebrating the best coffee KwaZulu-Natal has to offer and a guide containing the Top 100 coffee establishments in KZN was released to the public a week prior to the event. To add to the excitement of the night, the winners for each area (the South Coast, Pietermaritzburg and Midlands as well as Durban and the North Coast) were announced.

Editorial representative and organiser of the competition Ingrid Shevlin was delighted with this year’s turnout. “This is our 9th year of running the competition with Illovo on board as a sponsor and it’s exciting to see the extent of the influence the competition has had – and continues to have – on the industry. Not only are we promoting the industry, but are increasing knowledge and understanding of what coffee is all about among the public and raising standards in the industry. I believe it has made KwaZulu-Natal a leader in the country when it comes to coffee and in producing professionals of such a high standard… “

According to Illovo Sugar’s Darrell de Wet, “Illovo Sugar SA is proud to be a sponsor to the Café Society Awards which rewards and empowers people in this industry and particularly in the KZN province to strive for excellence. The impact this competition is having on the industry as a whole is quite evident with the overwhelming majority of this year’s winners at the Speciality Coffee Association of South Africa Nationals coming from KZN” de Wet enthused.
