BURG2BERG – that’s how we roll!

Preparations for the next edition of Burg2Berg are well under way, so it’s time to check that diary and mark off the dates! With a magnificent Drakensberg backdrop of Champagne Valley, convivial hosting by Ian and Su Don-Wauchope at Mountain Splendour Eco-Resort, September school holiday dates…what’s not to like!
BURG2BERG, a family “stage ride” aims to give adventurous riders the opportunity to explore the real beauty of the Berg & its magnificent views. It’s a weekend of scenic, fun and non-competitive cycling. Started by Maritzburg local Cornelia Puler, who, along with an energetic group of spinners from The Quarry Health & Fitness Club in Hilton, rode from Pietermaritzburg to the Drakensberg. Without the pressure of racing and cut-off times, BURG2BERG grew rapidly, and now, in its 5th year, has become a must-do for the mtb enthusiast wanting to share the experience with the whole family.

There is not a more tranquil place where you can ride your heart out and return home rejuvenated and ready to tackle life again.

The BURG2BERG training camp is held in March every year, & gives cyclists the opportunity to boost their fitness and get both physically and mentally strong before the start of the stage races. The distances are longer and routes more technical with Iain and the development team getting you out of your comfort zone! For more information, go to www.burg2berg.co.za.
The stage ride takes place in September, and is undoubtedly the most affordable stage ride south of the equator! This caters for the entire family as well as the cyclist looking for peace and quiet in the mountains away from the everyday stress. For more information, go to www.burg2berg.co.za.

The routes vary every day with plenty single track, and varied terrain from cattle track to jeep track also including farm roads. The calf crunching, hamstring biting climbs take you up the escarpments onto tribal land that is normally not accessible to cyclists. The stage offers two distance options daily, so depending on how challenged you are feeling, you can still enjoy a few hours in MTB heaven. There is a back vehicle with a medic that follows the cyclists, for anyone wanting a breather!

Leading the cyclists into the mountains are the development team riders from Mountain Splendour Eco-resort. These young men from the local community, guided by the Don-Wauchopes are true athletes and ambassadors to mountain biking. They are always smiling and are happy to wait for the cyclists who stop to capture the beauty of the moment.
Accommodation is at Mountain Splendour, where you can enjoy luxury tented accommodation (glamping!) or bring your own caravan/tent. Home-cooked comfort meals (and pudding) are on the menu, as well as out of this world cakes, brownies and shortbread at teatime.

Glamping is the way to go at Mountain Splendour.

So many of the stage races only cater for the cyclist, while the rest of the family is left at home. BURG2BERG is about the family! So everybody is catered for. Spouses, children and even grandparents are very welcome.

For the non-cyclists who decide to stay at camp, there’s an awesome rock pool for you to enjoy or a game of tennis. Or you welcome to enjoy a massage by our in-house massage therapist.
And for the children – well where do we start? So much to do in such a short time. There’s a cow that is waiting to be milked, ponies that need feeding (and riding) and an amazing obstacle course waiting to be ridden. The playground has so many treasures just waiting to be explored.
The cool Berg evenings are spent relaxing around the bonfire. Exhausted cyclists will fall asleep to the sound of the owls’ calls echoing in the mountain valley.

BURG2BERG IS FOOD FOR THE SOUL. There is not a more tranquil place where you can ride your heart out and return home rejuvenated and ready to tackle life again.
