Auditions for PMB choir
The Pietermaritzburg Children’s Choir, the premier regional children’s choir, is looking for dedicated and talented young singers to join them in their journey for 2018/19.
Under the capable hands of conductor, Simon Bester, with accompanist, Anne Duthie, the choir has continued to stand out in its featured performances this year.
Any youngsters between the age of 9 and 14 are welcome to audition. The choir’s manifesto is simply a love of singing.
PMBCC is a regional choir which draws its members from many different backgrounds from the greater Pietermaritzburg area and thus its diversity is representative of the city and country. It is a non-profit organisation.
Under Simon Bester’s leadership, it continues to grow in expertise and skill. Its repertoire includes classical, traditional and contemporary songs. However, the children learn so much more than choral singing: they learn about friendship, self-discipline, commitment, responsibility and team work.
The highlight for any choir is to perform for the public. In 2006, under the expertise and guidance of Rykie Boeke, the choir went on tour in Europe. It performed in the villages, towns and cities of Germany, Czechoslovakia and Hungary and received a standing ovation in Dresden. The aim of the tour was to promote cross-cultural contact through music.
World Choir Games
In 2014, the Pietermaritzburg Children’s Choir participated in the 8th World Choir Games in Riga, Latvia, achieving three Silver Diplomas.
The choir has compulsory practices once a week during the school term for two hours. There are also regular workshops, performances and an annual camp.
