April is Freedom Day Month…

Mandela

April is the month we celebrate Freedom Day – a truly South African celebration on the 27th of April commemorating the first democratic post-apartheid non-racial elections that were held on April 27th 1994, which saw Nelson Mandela elected as President. It’s a day of glory and remembrance for all South Africans.

Our oh so talented and prolific contributor Nikki Brighton grabbed the Freedom theme with both hands. Enjoy her “Free Lights and Water” (and make sure you get to SLIP in the Pietermaritzburg Botanical Gardens from the 25th of April), “Free the Chicks” enjoy the limelight in this month’s Food Hero, and our appropriate front page pic and page 6 story comes from Nikki’s collaboration with Nkulukelo Mdlala, a Gr 12 learner at Shea O’Connor Combined in Nottingham Road. We encounter Midlanders who give of their time freely – Carlos Pereira is another one of those whose passion he shares willingly!

The Meander Chronicle hard copy is free, logging onto www.meanderchronicle.co.za for more is also free, walking is free in the Midlands, smiling is free everywhere, greeting the person next to you should be free, but often comes with strings!

Enjoy the month of April!
