The Alick Rennie Family Mountain Trail Run Sunday, 21 September 2014 (8am)
The late Alick Rennie had, for a number of years been contemplating hosting a trail running event on his beautiful mountain farm in the Bulwer district. His idea was to share the splendor of the Mahwaqa Mountains with like-minded souls, who have a love of nature, the outdoors and exercise. The intention was also to raise funds to continue clearing alien vegetation from the mountains in order to protect their fragile veld ecosystems. Tragically Alick died in an aircraft accident on the 4th of December 2013. To honour Alick’s legacy, the Rennie family decided to pursue his idea of a trail run which lead to the decision to host the “Alick Rennie Family Mountain Trail Run” on his much loved and cherished farm for the first time this year on Sunday, 21st of September 2014.
The main event is a 24km trail run, and poses a fairly challenging yet spectacular route crossing pristine mountain streams, natural veld and climbing to its highest point at 2000m from the 1500m start. On a clear day the main berg from Giants Castle through to the Qachas neck area stands out like a cardboard model. The 10km course is more moderate, remaining in the foothills of the mountains but will nonetheless offer stunning views and be a rewarding run. The 5km is an easy run or walk around the cultivated low lands of the farm promising to be a great non-technical social event.
Limited food and beverages will be on sale, runners and their families are therefore encouraged to pack a picnic and enjoy the area after the race. All the events will start together at 8am on Sunday morning.
This is a family event and all are welcome to come and enjoy a day out. While there will be a fun kids play zone, however, this will require parental supervision. Children can take part in the 5km event at the discretion and supervision of a parent. The age limit on the 10km is 12 years and the 24km, 16 years.
