The 9th Annual Sunflower Jade Sky Hike will take place on Father’s Day this year – Sunday 19th June.

The organising team behind the event, Ian and Mandy Tyrer of My Tutor and Teaching Centre PMB assisted by Ian Preston and the staff of The Sunflower Fund in Durban, are eagerly anticipating another successful campaign.

The hike is held annually in memory of Jade Preston who passed away from leukaemia at the tender age of nine. The hike was initially held to raise funds in support of Jade’s brave fight but it has since been held in her memory after she sadly succumbed to her illness. This commemorative walk aims to “celebrate life and to remember those who were challenged by cancer and to support those being challenged with cancer,” says Mandy Tyrer.

The inspired trek appeals to outdoor and hiking enthusiasts as well as families and individuals of all ages and fitness levels. All are welcome to join in the adventure and to hike at their own pace, as it is not a race but simply a beautiful day to be enjoyed in the outdoors with those closest to you. The hike commences from the Sani Pass border post at 7.30am and covers approximately eight kilometres up the mountain to the Highest Pub in Africa.

The Midlands branch of the Four Wheel Drive of Southern Africa will lend their generous support again this year by selling breakfast rolls and hot beverages en-route as well as seconding hikers and ensuring that all participants return safely to the border post. Interested hikers should carry their passports and are encouraged to dress warmly and carry their own refreshments to sustain them along the way. The donation entry fee is a minimum of R80 per person and funds raised are in support of Veroney Judd-Stevens who is currently battling breast cancer for the second time and The Sunflower Fund who work toward growing the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) to give hope to patients diagnosed with life-threatening blood disorders, like leukaemia, who are in need of a stem cell transplant from a matching donor.
