Michaelhouse shines in FNB DUZI CANOE MARATHON 2016
Sixteen boys and two staff members completed the 2016 FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon this past weekend.
Craig Heenan, who paddled with Durban based Bailey de Fondaumiere, led the Michaelhouse charge coming in 2nd U18 after being placed 1st U18 after the first two days of racing. Some unfortunate problems on the final day saw them lose their lead and come in roughly 10 minutes behind the eventual u18 winners.

Emanuel Zaloumis, paddling with Hamish Lovemore from Hilton College, came in 3rd U18 holding onto a podium position by a mere 2 minutes.
While there is no U16 trophy, Warren Yoko and Craig Pitt placed first in their age group and also scooped the trophy for best time by a novice pair. A junior team trophy is also awarded and the combined efforts of Daniel Dillon, Kelvin Green, William Lyle and Carlisle Hartman earned Michaelhouse second place in this category behind Natal Canoe Club.
On another note, Alan and Andrew Houston (brothers and old boys) managed to win the U23 age group and finish in an astonishing fourth place overall.

Michaelhouse celebrates Shrove Tuesday

Shrove Tuesday races

Shrove Tuesday races

The tradition of Shrove Tuesday Pancake races at Michaelhouse started in 1987. The Chaplain at that time, Fred Pitout, wanted a fun event to advertise the beginning of Lent – that spiritual period of discipline and fasting as Jesus had experienced over 40 days in the Judean Desert.
Borrowing on a race around a quadrangle in the film “Chariots of Fire” each House team of one boy from each block plus Housemaster or Tutor run around the main quad benches flipping the pancake between each bench (i.e. four times), cheered on by the whole school. Dropped pancakes have to be flipped an extra time.

The event provided much entertainment, with all the Houses reportedly being disqualified for various misdemeanors.
