75 Years of Many Happy Returns

Cavern-75-Logo-Final-for-centrespread-editorial-ed160-jan16This year The Cavern celebrates 75 years of Many Happy Returns. It is set in a pristine valley in the Northern Drakensberg, just 3 hours from Durban and 3.5 hours from Gauteng which makes it the perfect meeting place.

The Cavern is a full board family resort nestled beneath the sandstone cliffs of the little berg and is surrounded by hills, forests and berg streams. Ruth & Bill Carte arrived in this remote part of the Drakensberg in 1941 to rear cattle for Judge Thrash. The terrain was no good and the veld was sour but Ruth saw the potential of running it as a small guest farm. Ruth borrowed money from an uncle and they bought the farm and began their journey in hospitality. Ruth’s sons, Peter & Anthony, worked with her during the 70’s & 80’s to build it into a thriving berg resort and now the 3rd generation are at the helm…

Cavern holidays are about reconnecting with family and friends by enjoying all the great outdoors has to offer. Hiking with children, MTB riding with friends, horseback riding into the hills beyond, trout fishing, lawn bowls or tennis keeps the active holiday maker busy for days.
For those rushed off their feet and feeling the stresses of city life, the Forest Retreat Spa offers wonderful treatments in the tranquil setting of the indigenous Fern Forest with the Puterill’s steam cascading below.

The Cavern has standard or superior accommodation. The superior rooms and suites are located overlooking the Fern Forest while the standard accommodation is around the main building set in vibrant gardens with a magnitude of birdlife and Drakensberg flora. All meals are included and the food is wholesome and plentiful. Tea is served in the morning and afternoon and sundowners can be enjoyed on the many decks overlooking the valley below.

The Cavern provides a wonderful escape to recharge and renew the body and soul.
