Rotary Fundraiser to Inspire Midlands Teachers
A healthy R6000, after costs, was raised by the Rotary Club of Hilton and Howick at its Valentine’s Supper Theatre: Flamenco Evening, and will be used to help the club inspire 25 Midlands teachers by providing them with study bursaries.
More than 130 people arrived at the Howick Agricultural Hall to enjoy an evening of dance, prizes and good fun. Before the event commenced, Gary Steynberg of HiQ Howick, arrived with a crate of prizes for guests, to add to the other prizes collected by the Club.
After the welcome by Club President Maurice Wilkinson, the dancers from Alma Flamenca took over, entertaining the audience with passionate and fiery routines. Rotarian and ECD project champion, Grant Edkins, took a moment to talk of a project that the club is undertaking.
According to the Stats SA figures of 2011, only 18 percent of the 9751 children (five years or younger) living in the Umgeni Municipality attend any formal early childhood development (ECD) centre. A shocking figure considering the fact that effective education needs to start at the 0-6 year phase. With this in mind, the Rotary Club of Hilton and Howick has committed to raising funds to provide bursaries to fund the NQF Level 5 ECD studies for 25 ECD teachers.
The club is working to obtain a grant from The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International to help fund the project. The Club hopes to have the funding in place to begin training next year. The Rotary Foundation will only part-fund the project, so the local Club has to raise at least 50% of the costs.
Prizes were generous! Graeme McKenzie won a Midlands Air Experience, Miranda Barnard a R500 meal voucher from The Cookhouse by Nicholsons, and Jan te Riele a R500 voucher towards a photoshoot from Ashleigh Wegener Portraits Photography.
A special thanks must go to our sponsors who donated prizes: Hi-Q Howick, The Cookhouse, Ashleigh Wegener of Ashleigh Wegener Portraits Photography, Greendale Superspar & Tops, Groundcover Leather Company, Curves Hilton, Misty Falls Spur, Neil Garden and Hugh Donaldson. Thanks too to The Office at Kodak and PostNet Howick for assisting with printing.
